The Department of English at the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University is a recognized center for the study of the English language, literature, and methods of teaching foreign languages. For the academic year 2020-2021, there are 314
full-time students, and 120 part-time students at the department. Classes for full-time and part-time students to obtain master’s and bachelor’s degrees, as well as for Ph.D. students, are conducted by 29 teaching staff members, including 28 full-time employees, 2 part-time employees, 2 full professors, 2 doctors of science, 15 candidates of science (candidates of sciences, associate professors – 11, candidates of sciences, assistant professors – 4) assistant professors – 7, Ph.D. students – 2.
The department offers a wide selection of educational programs for bachelor’s and master’s degrees: educational level bachelor’s in “Philology”, educational level bachelor’s in “Secondary Education”, educational level master’s in “Philology”
and educational level master’s specialty “Secondary Education”.
In addition, master’s students have the opportunity to obtain double degrees by participating in a double degree program at two universities: Chernivtsi National University and Pavol Josef Šafárik University, Kosice, Slovakia.
The main linguistic courses in the bachelor and master programs in “Philology” allow students to communicate successfully in English as a first foreign language and German/ French as a second foreign language; to solve complex specialized
tasks and practical problems in the field of linguistics, literary studies in the process of professional activity. The programs are aimed at the practical activities of the graduates, therefore, pedagogical practice is provided. Foreign assistant
professors (the American Peace Corps, the Fulbright Academic Program, and the British Council in Ukraine) participate in the implementation of educational programs.
Mandatory courses of educational programs guarantee the acquisition of competencies and skills in the field of linguistics and literature; in the professional activity of a philologist-specialist in English as a first foreign language and
German / French as a second foreign language, in communication in a foreign language in oral and written form, in the acquisition of soft skills and scientific research skills.
Specialized elective courses aim to consider the interests of students and provide an opportunity to choose their own educational trajectory, paying attention to the skills development, namely, creative and business writing, information technology, translation, business English, etc. The main courses in the bachelor and master programs in “Secondary Education” aim at theoretical and practical training in the main and second foreign languages with a thorough mastery of theoretical-linguistic, psychological-pedagogical courses, pedagogical practices in secondary educational institutions, research projects development and defence, involvement in the process of intercultural communication and participation in international academic exchange programs (i.e. Erasmus+), etc.
Mandatory courses of educational programs guarantee the formation of professional competencies of future teachers of foreign language and literature (English and German/ French) of primary (basic) secondary school, allow mastering methods of teaching foreign languages, modern technologies in the field of teaching foreign languages in general educational institutions of various degrees, scientific research methodology, prepare for the creative educational and
methodical activity, continuous self-education and professional self-improvement.
Specialized elective courses, considering the interests of students, provide an opportunity to draw their own educational trajectory, which focuses on the development of modern information technology skills, the organization of English
language learning according to the principles of inclusion, educational work, learning a second foreign language, carrying out a pedagogical experiment, etc.
Our graduates have a variety of employment opportunities. Thus, after completing the bachelor’s program in “Philology”, graduates receive a bachelor’s degree, which gives them the right to work in the scientific, literary, publishing and
educational fields; to take jobs in educational and scientific institutions, political and public organizations, companies, enterprises, translation centers.
After completing the bachelor’s program in “Secondary Education”, graduates receive a bachelor’s degree, which gives them the right to work in scientific and educational fields: as a teacher’s assistant in general educational institutions, a teacher in preschool educational institutions, an organizer of extracurricular educational work with children, a laboratory assistant of the scientific unit. A master’s degree in “Philology” enables one to work in scientific, literary and publishing, educational fields; in teaching, research and administrative positions in higher educational institutions of I-IV levels of accreditation; in printed and electronic mass media, PR-technologies, in various foundations, unions, humanitarian foundations and cultural centers, etc.
A master’s degree in “Secondary Education” enables to work as a teacher of a general educational institution, a methodologist, an organizer of extracurricular educational work with children, an inspector of educational, methodical work; inspector of secondary special and vocational educational institutions; inspector of schools, methodologist of a cultural and educational institution.
Feedback from graduates, students, and employers is important for the Department. Cooperation with them, consideration of comments and recommendations continuously improve the work of the Department.
The scientific work of students at the Department of English is carried out both within educational programs (writing courseworks and master’s theses) and in an extracurricular format. Thus, the Department has four scientific clubs, the
specialization of which provides students with the opportunity to prepare for writing their research and examine the field of study that interests them. The work results are articles, theses, speeches at international student conferences, projects,
round tables, and grants.
Students of the Department have the opportunity to practice English with native speakers. Volunteers of the US government agency Peace Corps work at the Department. For the better development of oral speech, a significant part of the
courses has a communicative direction.
Students have the opportunity to receive scholarships and study abroad as part of the Erasmus+ program of the European Union (universities in Poland, Lithuania, Spain, Austria, Slovakia, Romania, etc.). There is a cooperation agreement
between CHNU and the University of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, USA, according to which students of the Department of English can study at the American institution for one semester free of charge.
