The teaching process at the Department of the English Language is carried out in three areas: Anglistics, Methodology of Teaching English and Translation. The lecturers conduct courses in English (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening), Grammar (practical, theoretical, historical, comparative and functional), Discourse Analysis, Cognitive Linguistics, Lexicology (Derivatology, Semantics, Lexicography), Phonetics (practical, theoretical), History of Language, Translation (theory and practice), Regional Geography, Linguocultural Studies, Text Interpretation, Communication Theory and Practice, Methodology of Teaching English, Methods of Linguistic Analysis and Literature of English-speaking countries.
Cooperation with the Civic Education Project, the British Council, the America House, the OSCE and the East European Education Project enables students to continuously improve their language and linguocultural skills. Peace Corps volunteers regularly work at the Department of English Language. They organize writing competitions and English club meetings for the students of the Faculty, conduct practical classes in conversational English with undergraduate students, assisting them in successfully overcoming a language barrier and communicating in a foreign language. Cooperation with the Fulbright Program of Educational Exchange results in courses of lectures held by its graduates for senior students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
The Department of English Language provides certified specialists with a unique opportunity to obtain a second higher education by enrolling in an accelerated degree program which takes 5 semesters to complete. After graduation students obtain Specialist degree and may optionally continue their studies on Master’s Program level.
Having received high-quality training in the organization and conduct of a scientific research and presentation of its results at the Department of English language, some graduates continue their studies and enroll in Master’s and Postgraduate courses at Chernivtsi, Kyiv and Lviv National Universities, Central European University, the University of Saskatchewan (Canada), University of Brunswick (Canada) and other Ukrainian and foreign Universities. Every year the best graduates of the Department of English Language at CHNU replenish the teaching staff of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, inheriting and continuing traditions of our Almamater.
